ChatGPT is now the highest converting digital lead source for orthodontic practices.
We looked at 12 months of data across 138 orthodontic practices. The patients coming through ChatGPT and other AI tools are booking treatment at higher rates than patients from any other source. And the numbers have doubled in a year. Here is what is happening and what practice owners need to know.

The shift
Your future patients are asking ChatGPT first.
For 25 years, someone looking for an orthodontist in your area typed a search into Google and got a list of blue links. They clicked one, arrived at a practice website, and made their decision. That is not the only path anymore.
Today, a patient can open ChatGPT and ask "who is the best orthodontist in my suburb for adult invisalign," or "how much do braces cost for teenagers," and get a written answer that names two or three specific practices. If your practice is not in that answer, you do not exist in that patient's decision.
We wanted to know how big this really is. So we looked.
We reviewed data from over 130 orthodontic practices across five countries. For every website visitor who came from an AI tool, we tagged them and cross-referenced to see how many turned into real patient enquiries. This article is what we found.
What we looked at
How many people were coming to our practice websites from AI
Which AI tools were sending them
What those patients were doing once they landed
How they behaved compared to patients arriving from Google and social media
Twelve months, side by side
Website visitors from AI doubled. Leads more than doubled.
AI-referred visits to our practices' websites nearly doubled between the start of the period and the most recent months. Patient enquiries grew even faster.

Aug-Oct 2025
2,943 visits
416 patient enquiries
May-Jul 2026
5,797 visits
944 patient enquiries
The takeaway
The line only goes one way.

Of TIO practices are already being named when patients ask AI for an orthodontist recommendation.
Not just the flagship practices. Not just the big cities. Almost every practice we work with, in every country, is showing up in AI conversations right now.
Which AI tools are actually sending patients
Right now, AI search
means ChatGPT.
97% of AI-referred patient visits came from ChatGPT. Everything else is tiny by comparison. Gemini will climb fast because it is built into every Google product, but right now, being visible in ChatGPT is where the patient traffic actually is.

Here is the important bit
You cannot buy your way
to the top of ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is starting to run advertising, but under OpenAI's current policy, dental and orthodontic practices are not eligible to buy ads. Full stop.
The only way to appear when a patient asks ChatGPT for a recommendation is to earn that citation. No auction. No promoted position. No fast track for the biggest marketing budget. It is a level playing field, and it rewards authority built over time.
The practices that move first will be the winners.
Every practice that builds strong AI visibility now compounds it over time. The reputation, the citations, the third-party mentions all accumulate. Practices that wait until the field is crowded will be trying to catch up to competitors who have had a two or three year head start on being the ones ChatGPT names.
The number that should stop you
Are AI referrals as valuable as dental and patient referrals?
Every practice owner knows the two best sources of new patients are dental referrals and word-of-mouth from happy patients. They arrive already trusting you. AI-referred patients behave the same way.
Put it in new patient enquiries. For every 100 people who arrive at your website from a Google search, about 9 or 10 turn into a new patient enquiry. From AI, that number is 15. That is 5 more new patient enquiries out of every 100 visits, and you did not pay for a single click.
Now factor in that AI traffic doubled in the last 12 months and is on track to double again. A practice getting 500 AI visits this year is looking at 1,000 next year. Same conversion rate, double the volume: 75 new patient enquiries this year, 150 next year, and none of it costs you anything.

Why AI patients are so much better
AI is shortlisting practices for patients.
When someone asks ChatGPT for the best orthodontist in a particular suburb, the AI does the work of narrowing the field. It looks at reviews, credentials, treatment options and reputation, then hands the patient two or three practices with a short explanation of why each might suit them.
By the time that patient lands on your website, they are not comparing you against ten options. They are checking you against a shortlist of two. That is a completely different patient to someone who saw a Facebook ad while scrolling.
A click from an AI answer is a patient who has already decided you are worth investigating.
That is why the numbers are so different. A Facebook ad interrupts someone watching cat videos. A Google search sends someone browsing between four practices. An AI referral sends someone who has read the case, chatted with AI, and clicked to confirm.

The Reddit factor
The Rise of Reddit,
the reviews AI is listening to.
Reddit is the single most-quoted source AI tools pull from. When a patient asks ChatGPT "who is the best orthodontist in Melbourne," the answer is often shaped by threads exactly like this one. Real people asking real questions and naming real practices.
You cannot advertise your way onto Reddit. Promotional posts get deleted within minutes. But practices that show up as genuine experts in the conversations already happening get referenced by name over time, and those references feed straight into what AI recommends to the next patient.
Google just made this measurable
For the first time, we can see
when AI is quoting your practice.
In mid-2026 Google shipped the report we had been waiting for. Its AI-generated answers, the ones that sit at the top of a search result and often replace the need to click, are now measurable inside Search Console. For every TIO practice we can now see:
When your practice is mentioned in an AI-generated answer
Which patient questions caused you to appear
Which pages Google chose to reference
How often patients click through vs just read the answer
Combined with the visit data from ChatGPT and the other AI tools, we can finally see the full picture of how AI is finding, describing and sending patients to every TIO practice. Practices without an agency across this are flying blind.

What actually helps
Four things that make a practice
more likely to be recommended by AI.
None of this is a trick. It is the same work that makes your website easier for a patient to trust. AI just rewards you for doing it well.
01
Answer real patient questions in depth on your website
A page that just says 'we do invisalign' is useless to AI. A page that actually explains what it costs, how long it takes, whether it works for adults and what to expect week by week is what AI quotes. Most practice websites do not have this. The ones that do get cited.
02
Make sure your practice details are identical everywhere
Your practice name, address and phone number need to match across your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, Whitecoat and every directory you appear in. When AI sees the same details in the same format in ten places, it gets confident about recommending you. When it sees three different versions, it gets confused.
03
Keep your Google Business Profile active
This is what feeds AI when someone asks a location-based question. Reviews, photos, updates, opening hours, service list. All of it flows into AI answers. A neglected Google Business Profile is one of the biggest reasons a practice gets skipped over.
04
Show up as an expert in the conversations happening about your speciality
That includes Reddit, patient forums, orthodontic association directories, and any local health publication that will have you. AI models weight third-party mentions heavily. The practices with the strongest AI presence are the ones with a reputation that exists outside their own website.
What we do about it
AI visibility is part of
every practice we run.
Every website we build and every strategy we run is designed for two audiences at once: real patients making a decision, and the AI agents deciding whether to recommend you.
Read more about our AI search work →Rewriting practice websites so they actually answer the questions patients are asking, in the level of detail AI needs to quote them
Making practice details consistent across every platform online: Google, Facebook, directories, review sites, the lot
Teaching every practice team how to run their own Google Business Profile properly. We do not charge clients for something they can do themselves in-house
Building a reputation for each practice on third-party sites that AI trusts: associations, review platforms, local health media
Monitoring Reddit and the other places where patients discuss orthodontic decisions, with a plan for how each practice can participate professionally
Using the new Google AI reporting to see exactly where each practice is showing up in AI answers, and where it is being missed
The bottom line
Three things every practice owner
should take away from this.
One.
AI is already sending you patients, whether you know it or not. And those patients are booking treatment at higher rates than patients from any other source. This is happening right now, not in three years.
Two.
The AI conversation about your practice is happening whether or not you influence it. If your website has not been touched in three years, if it only has eight pages of thin content, if your practice details are inconsistent across the web, if your Google Business Profile is neglected, then AI is not recommending you. Depth of content is what AI rewards. It is recommending the practice down the road that has all of that in order.
Three.
We can now measure all of this. What used to be invisible is finally visible. Practices that pay attention will pull ahead. Practices that ignore it will keep bleeding new patients to the competitors that did not.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions.
Yes. Across the 138 practices we looked at, 94% received at least some patient visits from AI tools like ChatGPT in the past 12 months. The strongest performers got well over 100 visits a month. It is happening in every country we work in.
